The 925 plan introduces college students to career planning and helps them develop a mindset of ownership as early investors in their 9-to-5. The goal is to guide them to plan for an independent life, with 9-to-5 being a part of it while developing a wider range of career options.


The plan at $99 is affordable and can fit into  students’ busy schedules. It is also flexible to accommodate all students at whatever stage and readiness they may be to invest in their careers.

Kay Cioffi’s current 9-to-5 consists of growing and managing several companies, including the 925 Plan startup, a real estate company providing luxury housing for executives, and a retained talent acquisition firm. 

 

Since 2004, Kay has been a trusted figure in recruiting talent for clients in multiple industries and functions, from Wall Street to Silicon Valley. As the founder of the 925 Plan, Kay’s mission is to make expert career counseling affordable to all college students and position them to become early investors in their careers.


Kay is a member of the University of Alabama Student Life Leadership Council, an advisory board to UA’s head of Student Life on initiatives ranging from mental health, career service, Greek life, housing, and more. Previously, she served on the Board of Trustees and Cybersecurity Advisory Board at Mercy University, a private college with over 11,000 students. 

 

In 2017, Kay was honored by the Eileen Fisher Leadership Institute for her significant contributions to programs empowering women and girls in computing. Kay has a Bachelor’s in Biological Sciences from Southern Methodist University, Dallas, TX, and is licensed as a Hogan Assessment and Advanced Feedback Certification professional. 

 

What she enjoys the most about her 9-to-5 is connecting with individuals along the full career spectrum and helping them reimagine work to match their talent, interests, and values.

Tawanna Brown is a 925 plan advisor based in Tuscaloosa, AL. Her current 9-to-5 is as an Account Manager for CampusESP, a tech company that provides a comprehensive parent engagement platform for institutions to connect meaningfully with families via portals, emails, and text, ensuring parents have the information to be advocates and advisors for their students. She also teaches at the University of Alabama a course for first-year UA students that provides an introduction to the nature of higher education and to the function, resources, and activities of the university. This course is designed to help students make the transition to a large comprehensive research university, develop a better understanding of the learning process, and acquire basic academic survival skills. The ultimate goal of the course is to equip each student
with the confidence and basic skills necessary for degree attainment.


Previously, as Assistant Director of UA’s Parent and Family Programs, Tawanna made significant contributions by assisting in planning parent orientation programs, liaising with admissions and scholarship offices, and increasing engagement among alumni volunteers. She also worked in earlier positions in the UA’s Office of Student Care and Well-Being where she provided advocacy and case management for students, coordinated crisis and emergency management efforts, and managed caseloads involving student welfare.


Tawanna earned her Master of Arts (M.A.) in Counseling Psychology from The University of West Alabama and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Criminal Justice from The University of Alabama.

Susan Certoma is a 925 Plan Advisor based in Westport, Connecticut. Her current 9-to-5 has multiple facets. She is a Board Director for an Energy Company, a Community Bank and for an Industry Association. In these roles she has served as the Chair of several committees as well as held a Board Chair position. As the co-founder of Point2Point, she provides strategic advice in the areas of digital transformation, emerging technologies, technology strategy and leadership to executives and board directors.  Susan also teaches Graduate and Undergraduate Finance courses at a local University.

Susan Certoma has been an executive in next-generation businesses, developing innovative solutions for Financial Services and other industries for over 30 years. In her leadership roles, Susan has been responsible for managing business P&L’s as well as global organizations. In her Board and Advisory roles, she has worked with CEOs in multiple industries focused on business value and transformation.

​

Previously, Susan was President of Enterprise Engineering, Inc. (EEI) with responsibility for the strategic consulting and software businesses. Prior to her role at EEI, she was President of the Wealth & Markets Division at Broadridge. Ms. Certoma also served as the global Chief Information Officer for the Corporate & Investment Bank at Wachovia. Prior to Wachovia, Susan held senior leadership positions in Technology & Operations at Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch.

As a leader, she has chaired committees for Women in Technology, Learning & Development, Career Coaching & Development, Employee Engagement and Talent Management.  She is a member of several Women’s Networks including Extraordinary Women on Boards.

 

Susan is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of St. John’s University with a B.S in Management / Economics and an MBA in Finance.

 

What Susan enjoys about her 9-to-5 is working with others to inspire the entrepreneurial and innovative spirit in each individual to create a career that matches their passion.

School Counselor

Michelle Friedman is a 925 Plan Advisor based in Westport, Connecticut, with an extensive background in counseling and advising students across various educational settings.  She worked as a school counselor in Greenwich Public Schools and Westport Public Schools, focusing her work on facilitating academic and social-emotional growth in her students.  Additionally, she served as an Associate Director of Admissions at Mercy University, where she specialized in nursing program admissions and freshman matriculation.  While taking time to be with her young children, Michelle privately advised students on the college application process and worked as an executive functioning skills coach with high school and college students.

 
Michelle is actively involved in the community and currently sits on the Board of Directors for !mpaCT, an organization with the mission to support, volunteer, and raise awareness for Connecticut charities.  She also volunteers with the therapeutic horseback riding program at New Canaan Mounted Troop and is pursuing certification as a therapeutic riding instructor.

 
Michelle holds an Ed.M. and Certificate of Advanced Studies in Counseling from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.  She received her BA in Psychology from University of Maryland, College Park.  She is a certified School Counselor in the state of Connecticut.

Brandy Mitchell Coaching – Owner & Coach

 

Currently, Brandy Mitchell’s 9-to-5 is as owner, operator, and coach of a holistic coaching business. Based in Croton-on-Hudson, NY, she helps individuals recognize that wellbeing comes not only from physical self-care, but also through the mental and emotional wellbeing of having meaning and purpose in work and life; awareness of unique abilities and strengths; connected relationships with friends, family, and colleagues; and rest and recovery outside of work.


Previously, Brandy worked as a Senior Investigative Research Analyst at a Private Investigation Firm based in Manhattan, where she helped support the due diligence process for clients ranging from hedge funds to private family offices. Prior to this, she worked within the brand
and content strategy department at Morgan Stanley, helping to create and streamline content for the Investment Banking Division.


Brandy’s first career love was grounded in the creative arts. Upon graduation from college, Brandy moved to New York City and performed in several Broadway productions, as well as national tours. Even in the midst of acting on Broadway, she knew that her heart was longing
for more meaning and purpose. Her curiosity led her to explore how artists balance creative endeavors with other types of employment. In addition to her corporate work, Brandy has worked as a teaching artist in a Brooklyn public school, using creative drama techniques to
support literacy skills, foster cooperation and collaboration, and help students gain self-confidence.


Brandy earned her Master of Science in Educational Theatre (M.S.E.D) from The City College of New York and her Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) with Honors in Theatre from Rollins College in Winter Park, FL. She is a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC), as well as a Positive Intelligence Mental Fitness Coach.


What Brandy enjoys most about her current 9-to-5 is harnessing the experiences from her eclectic career background to help people forge their own path in an authentic way, true to themselves.

Nagaraj Rao is a 925 Plan Advisor based in Montrose, New York. He served as the Chairman of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences at Mercy University for 19 years. He was the Interim Dean for the School of Liberal Arts. Nagaraj retired in August 2022.


Dr. Rao received more than 20 grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF), US Department of Education (DOE), Mathematical Association of America (MMA), Tensor Foundation, CISCO, and others. All these projects focused on providing financial support, developing research skills, and offering opportunities to participate in conferences to students and faculty. His longest standing of his grant awards is Mathematical Modeling at Mercy University (M 3 U) supported by NSF, DOE, MAA, and Tensor Foundation spread over 25 years. This summer program has been serving high school students, encouraging women and minorities to participate in real world math-based projects. These participants were intelligent and motivated. Many of them have gone on to Harvard, Yale, MIT, UPenn, U of Chicago, Stanford, Princeton, and more. Nagaraj has served on review committees at NSF, DOE, and MAA. 

 

He was instrumental in bringing the Cybersecurity program to Mercy University when there were almost no such programs in the area. Mercy now offers BS, MS, and a five-year BS+MS Cybersecurity program. He was also instrumental in developing BS+MS five-year Math Education program in collaboration with the Dean of the School of Education.

 

Nagaraj received his MS in Computer Science from The City College, CUNY, MS in Mathematics and Ph.D. in Applied Mathematical Sciences from the University of Rhode Island.

In her current 9-to-5, Samantha runs Student Services for the 925 Plan. She is responsible for communication and outreach to students, which ranges from monitoring and responding to questions to establishing and managing social media campaigns and creating awareness among students on the benefits of career planning. Samantha is also the student advocate on the team, ensuring that the student perspective and needs are addressed as the company rolls out its services. 


Samantha also teaches at elementary schools in Mobile, Alabama, where she continues to build her education and family services credentials. She plans to pursue graduate studies in 2025.

 

Before her current role, Samantha served as a Crisis Counselor for Vibrant Emotional Health, a New York City mental health services provider. In this challenging position, she provided not just guidance and emotional support but also crisis intervention to those in distress.

 

Samantha earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a minor in Human Development and Family Studies from The University of Alabama, where she was actively involved in the Sigma Delta Tau sorority and the Peer Mentor program.


A year out of college, Samantha knows how difficult it is to find that perfect match and is excited that her 9-to-5 is about helping students plan for a smooth transition after college. She is also very grateful and excited to have the opportunity to work alongside her mom!

I received a 925 plan gift card and I’m not ready or have time to think about my career.

Schedule the first session. It’s only 33 minutes and there’s no actual work required if you’re not ready. But if you are ready and have some goals or timeline in mind, we can customize to meet your needs.

What is "the 925 plan"?

The 925 Plan is simple yet transformative. Our mission is to equip college students with the skills they need to transition seamlessly from their academic journey to becoming early investors in their careers. We understand that transitioning from academia to the professional world can be daunting, and we're here to bridge that gap.

How does the 925 plan work?

The student schedules the first session to kick off the 925 plan. A plan advisor will email the student before the session for introductions and answer any questions. The student can also schedule a 15-minute free consultation with a plan advisor to chat about the 925 plan.

Who are the "early investors"?

An “early investor” is any student who receives or purchases the 925 plan gift card to invest in their career planning

What is the role of a "plan advisor"?

The 925 plan advisor works closely with the student to assess where he/she/they might be in their 9-to-5 plans, dreams, and experience and helps to brainstorm about potential career paths while also considering studies and activities while attending college.  All 925 plan advisors have worked with college students, either as professional coaches and/or adjunct professors.  Please see our current roster of plan advisors.

What can I expect from the career coaching sessions?

The 925 plan is flexible to accommodate all undergraduates at whatever stage and readiness they may be to invest in their careers and address a wide range of topics, skills and resources the student may need to create a 925 plan:

How long is each coaching session?

Each session is 33 minutes.

How many sessions are included with the $99 gift card?

There are three sessions with the gift card purchase.

Can I purchase additional sessions?

Additional $99 gift cards can be purchased to continue to build on the student’s 925 plan. 

Is there a limit to the number of gift cards I can purchase?

There are no restrictions on the number of gift cards a single person can buy.  However, the gift cards are non-refundable.

What if I need to reschedule a coaching session?

Coaching sessions can be rescheduled once as long as it is 24 hours prior to the scheduled session. 

How do I redeem the gift card?

Is there an expiration date for the gift card?

No.

Can I gift the 925 plan gift card to someone else?

The gift cards are nontransferable. (i.e., a student who received the gift cannot give or sell their gift card to another student).

Is my personal information kept confidential?

Yes. Personal information and coaching sessions will remain confidential, even if a parent or guardian purchased the card for a student.

What happens if I'm not satisfied with the coaching sessions?

Does completing the 925 plan guarantee me an internship or employment?

No, but completing the plan will help increase the chances of finding meaningful employment.

Will the plan advisor reach out to potential employers on the student’s behalf?

The plan advisor will help the student to identify targets and contacts as well as expand their network but cannot operate as an “agent” on the student’s behalf.
